SWPPP & Project Documentation
ABOUT
My background is 40 years of Oilfield Services and Operations with numerous Companies in numerous Countries. In the roles of both Superintendent and Operations Manager, SWPPP became one of many operational issues for a pad operation. A construction site has many parallels with oilfield site. Both sites require environmental compliance good planning and organization to ensure a safe and efficient operations. In my experience, a high performing operation required teamwork and effective communication. Borneo Environmental aspires to be a part of your team and create value in the service we provide for you.

What is a SWPPP?
A Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is a formal set of documentation that contains all required information for a storm water permit holder. Minimum requirements of a standard SWPPP include:
-
A detailed description of relevant nearby receiving waters
-
Listing of potential pollutant sources on premises
-
Contact information to storm water operator and pollution prevention team (or other administrator)
-
Schedule of regular housekeeping inspections
-
Summary of pollution control measures implemented
-
Signed certification of the SWPPP
-
Other documentation for special cases may apply
It is crucial that the plan is kept up-to-date. Even with best practice control measures implemented, all companys are always at risk of an accident. With a sound SWPPP, a business can reduce risk to lowest possible point. Furthermore, if a business that is in compliance does experience an accident, there will likely be no regulatory action from environmental authorities (accidents do happen, everyone understands). However, if a business suffers an accident and is found not compliant, it is very likely that there would be legal concequences as the case could always be made that had there been a proper SWPPP implemented in the first place, there might have been no accident. It can easily become a sticky situation if these legally mandated best practices aren’t followed, so be sure keep your system up-to-date and in compliance.

Project Documentation
Proper construction documentation is an essential aspect of the project manager’s responsibilities. Think of the amount of paperwork that passes through their hands on any given project. One reason the industry is so reliant on paperwork is the need to keep track of all the moving parts, all of the team members, and to increase visibility and communication. However, many times written records just don’t cut the mustard. They can be subjective, unclear, potentially fraudulent or just plain wrong.

Anyone who has been in the construction business long enough knows that changes happen, delays occur, and disputes inevitably arise. All of these issues cost time and money for everyone on the build. Having a clear, visual record of the project’s lifespan can go miles in resolving these unavoidable issues. Documentation is great, but providing photographic backup is an easy and definitive way to increase the accuracy of a project’s records.
